Photocredit: Instagram @l0u_da_barber Because we live in a steadily advancing technology-based world, marketing has shifted heavily towards social media. Instagram is one of the biggest platforms. Barbers have began to showcase their work to attract clients from all over. However, lately some of these pictures out of hand. Let’s dive further into the matter. DISCLAIMER: This blog is not meant to bash any particular barber, just bring light to a situation. Why doesn’t my haircut look like the picture??? - Picture perfect, or too good to be true?...Have you ever sat in the barber chair and showed your barber a picture that you saw off of Instagram or Facebook? Your barber gives you a nod of approval and proceeds to service you. He finishes the haircut and hands you the mirror. It looks good, but it’s not as crisp as the picture. Deep down you’re a little disappointed. Is your barber not up to par? Are his clippers just not as sharp? - Many barbers have began using Photoshop on their pictures, and these “Picture Perfect” cuts have created a misconception among clients. Over-editing pictures gives clients a sense of falsehood and overexpectation. - Am I saying that touching up a haircut photo is wrong?....Absolutely not..However, it is wrong to edit to the point where it’s considered false advertising. - Casing point: Don’t ruin the image of barbering and barbershops with Photoshop. Understanding Enhancements - Many people are unaware that many barbers have applied color enhancements to the hairline in many popular haircut pictures. As stated before, there is absolutely nothing wrong with enhancements, as many clients will pay extra to have that extra crisp look for a day, or until they wash their hair. - It is just important that barbers do a good job of communicating realistic expectations for the client. - Some people like just a natural, clean haircut, and others like the over-the-top enhanced look. It’s really just contingent upon preference and the skillset of the barber. Takeaways Clippers and liners can only do so much. For barbers, if you’re going to edit a picture, keep it moderate. For clients, don’t set unrealistic expectations for your barber, as you will disappoint yourself in the end.
