Are you one of those people that love the feeling of freshly washed hair?  Me too, but how much is too much??  Particularly during the summer months, hair can accumulate buildup from products, dirt, and dandruff.  Not to mention, buildup can be worse for people that workout regularly and hard labor workers that sweat their hair out every day.

YOU DON'T NEED TO WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY
Your scalp has natural oil in it, so shampooing it every day is stripping your hair of it's natural oil and drying it out.  This could potentially lead to dry and itchy scalp or dandruff.  As an alternative, instead of shampooing your hair every day, rinse it thoroughly with hot water on the days that you don't shampoo it.  This will eliminate buildup, but won't completely dry the hair out.

TWICE A WEEK SHOULD SUFFICE
Washing the hair twice a week should be more than enough to keep your scalp and hair cleansed without completely stripping it of moisture.  If you have extremely oily hair or skin, then it may require 3-4 times per week.  However, hair does not need to be shampooed every single day.

CHOOSE A SHAMPOO THAT WORKS FOR YOU
All shampoo is not created equal.  Many people have sensitive skin and there are several different textures of hair.  If you have oily skin, you may require a stronger cleansing shampoo such as Head & Shoulders or Selsum Blue.  If you have fine or thinning hair, you may need to use a more gentle, natural shampoo such as Shea Moisture or any other sulfate-free shampoos out on the market.  For people with certain scalp conditions, you may require a shampoo such as T-Gel or a prescription-strength shampoo.

DON'T FORGET THE CONDITIONER!
This is one CRITICAL step of a hair care routine that many people (males predominately) forget to do.  After you have shampooed the hair, it needs to receive nutrients in order to soften the hair follicles back up.  If you pay close enough attention, you can easily distinguish between a person that regularly conditions, and a person that just shampoos and goes.  Don't be that person.

I found it amusing when you said that washing your hair regularly can dehydrate your scalp. One of my fears is to lose my hair, and I try to maintain it as healthy as possible. I will take your advice into considerating the next time I buy a shampoo that stands my hair.
